Fatekeeper FAQ
24questions answered — from "what is this game" to build archetypes, Early Access value, technical requirements, and what to expect from the roadmap.
Basics
What is Fatekeeper?
Fatekeeper is a first-person action RPG developed by Paraglacial and published by THQ Nordic. It combines physics-driven melee combat with deep spellcasting and a Path-of-Exile-level skill tree in a handcrafted dark fantasy world.
Is Fatekeeper in Early Access?
Yes. Fatekeeper launched on Steam Early Access on June 2, 2026. The current build contains approximately 2 hours of content; the full release targets ~15 hours over an estimated 18-month EA period.
How much does Fatekeeper cost?
Fatekeeper launched at approximately $10 USD with a launch discount applied. The price is planned to increase at full release — buying during Early Access is the cheapest window.
Who made Fatekeeper?
Fatekeeper is developed by Paraglacial, an independent studio of 13 people, and published by THQ Nordic GmbH (part of Embracer Group). THQ Nordic's involvement provides stable update pipeline and community support.
What are the Steam reviews for Fatekeeper?
At launch, Fatekeeper holds a Mostly Positive rating on Steam with 76% positive reviews out of 6,191 total. German and Polish audiences rate it Very Positive; English reviews average slightly lower, primarily citing content depth at EA launch.
Is Fatekeeper worth buying in Early Access?
Yes, at ~$10. The physics combat system and skill tree depth are complete and polished. The caveat is content volume — ~2 hours is honest for EA but limited. If the combat concept appeals, the risk is low at this price. The full 15-hour release is the long-term value proposition.
What genre is Fatekeeper?
First-person action RPG with soulslike checkpoint mechanics. Most closely comparable to Dark Messiah of Might & Magic — physics-driven melee, spellcasting, and an expansive skill tree. Not an open-world game; encounters are handcrafted and deliberate.
Is there multiplayer in Fatekeeper?
No. Fatekeeper is a single-player offline game. No co-op or PvP is planned in the current roadmap.
Gameplay
What kind of combat does Fatekeeper have?
First-person physics-driven melee and spellcasting. You can push enemies into walls, knock them off platforms, chain spells with melee strikes, and use the environment offensively. Every encounter has environmental kill options. Reviewers compare the feel to Dark Messiah of Might & Magic.
Is Fatekeeper like Skyrim?
It shares the first-person perspective and RPG progression, but Fatekeeper's combat is far more aggressive and physics-interactive. A closer comparison is Dark Messiah of Might & Magic meets Elden Ring — heavier, more deliberate, more punishing. Skyrim's combat is passive by comparison.
How deep is the skill tree?
Reviewers compare it to Path of Exile in scope — multiple distinct build archetypes (pure warrior, battle-mage, shadow assassin, arcane scholar) are viable from launch. The tree is wide enough that two playthroughs can feel like different games with different character investments.
Does Fatekeeper have a save system?
Yes, via campfire checkpoints — similar to soulslike conventions. Progress is saved at campfires; dying before reaching one means replaying from the last checkpoint. Campfires also restore health and spell resources, and function as fast-travel points later.
How long is Fatekeeper right now?
The current Early Access build contains approximately 2 hours of content, covering the Undercroft dungeon and partial Frozen Wastes area. The full release roadmap targets ~15 hours. Paraglacial estimates the EA period will last around 18 months.
Which build archetype should I start with?
Pure Warrior for beginners — it's the most forgiving and lets you learn the physics system without managing spell cooldowns. Battle-Mage for players who want the strongest current DPS (Freeze + heavy strike combo). Shadow Assassin and Arcane Scholar have higher skill ceilings and are better for a second playthrough.
Can I respec my character?
Yes. The skill tree allows respec, with early nodes being cheap to reassign. Cost scales as you go deeper into the tree, so experimenting in the first hour is low-risk. Full respec is more expensive but available.
Does Fatekeeper have a difficulty setting?
Not in the current EA build. Difficulty is emergent — combat gets harder through encounter design and enemy types, not a slider. The skill tree and gear system give you the tools to adjust your effective difficulty.
What happens when you die in Fatekeeper?
You respawn at the last campfire you activated. Progress since that save is lost. Enemies respawn in some areas. This makes campfire management critical — always activate and save at every campfire before progressing.
Are there boss fights?
Yes. The current EA build includes boss encounters in the Undercroft and at the transition to the Frozen Wastes. Boss fights emphasize the physics system — environmental kills and stagger chains are often faster than pure DPS.
Technical
Does Fatekeeper work on Linux?
Fatekeeper has been tested working via Steam's Proton compatibility layer. Some users reported technical issues on Linux/Proton at EA launch — check the Steam forums for the latest compatibility status as Paraglacial is actively patching.
What are the minimum PC requirements?

Does Fatekeeper require an internet connection?
No persistent internet connection is required — Fatekeeper is a single-player offline game. A Steam connection is needed for initial download and updates only.
Does Fatekeeper support Steam Deck?
Steam Deck compatibility is in progress. The current EA build is not officially Steam Deck verified, but Paraglacial has stated Deck support is a roadmap priority. Check the Steam page for the latest verification status.
How large is the Fatekeeper download?
The current EA build requires 15GB of storage. This is expected to grow as content is added through the EA period.
Are there known bugs in the EA build?
